Play For Good

Rosie’s House

Did you know when you play at Gila River Resorts & Casinos, you’re playing for good?

The Arizona Tribal-State Gaming Compact provides shared revenues from gaming to invest in improving education, healthcare, conservation, and the economies of local communities throughout the state. Under the compact, 12% of revenue from local casinos is distributed to local cities, towns, and counties for community services and public safety programs, as well as non-profit organizations. Gila River Resorts & Casinos and the Gila River Indian Community, are working together to provide funding to support nonprofits who are making positive contributions to the local community. This year, Rosie’s House has been selected to be a recipient of this funding.

Rosie’s House is a free after-school music academy for children that focuses on youth development, serving low-income families who do not have access to music education. The organization believes music education is a catalyst for improved quality of life in youth. This is one of the largest free afterschool music programs in the nation, serving more than 10,000 students over the past 25 years.

When students come to Rosie’s House, they are given a platform for expression and reflection. By ensuring all youth have access to music education, Rosie’s House is eliminating barriers to a powerful educational opportunity. In the act of learning a musical instrument, each child develops valuable life skills such as confidence, creativity, teamwork, and discipline. The benefits of studying music bear out in incredible data that shows the intense cognitive, social, and emotional impact of learning a musical instrument.

Participating students can take free piano, strings, guitar, woodwinds, brass, and voice lessons and receive a free instrument. The nonprofit provides 20,000 free music lessons and loans 300 free instruments annually. They also hold more than 60 concerts per year for more than 10,000 audience members.

Additionally, they focus on student success by offering programs like College Path, where high school students can participate in workshops, learn how to submit college applications, and go through scholarship processes. In the past four years, 97% of senior students who participated in the program have achieved their college goals. They also provide many students with daily meals through a partnership with St. Mary’s Food Bank.

With the funding, Rosie’s House is looking to expand its programs and provide more lessons to more children throughout the Valley.
